Bluestone Energy Ltd is proposing to develop a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Scottish Water’s Airdrie Sewage Treatment Works (STW) site, located on land off B753 Locks Street, Airdrie, ML5 4PZ. The project is known as ‘Airdrie Battery Storage’ and would comprise of battery energy storage units, with associated ancillary infrastructure, as well as a cable route (1.88 km in length) connecting the BESS to the nearby Scottish Power Electricity Network (SPEN) substation at Coatbridge Grid Supply Point.

This website provides information about the project and the application and has been developed as part of the pre-planning application process, to allow the public an opportunity to learn about the development proposals and submit comments and feedback prior to the submission of the planning application.

This website will be updated by the project team with key information about the development, as the project progresses through the pre-application stage.

The development would consist of a 49.9 MW / 49.9 MWh BESS (Battery Energy Storage System). As the proposed capacity of the development is under 50 MW the development proposal is subject to the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997.  The determining authority is North Lanarkshire Council.

The forthcoming planning application will seek permission to build and operate the battery storage facility for a period of 25 years.
